How to rank in ChatGPT as a local business (2026 guide)
Updated 2026-10-28. By the SeenRank team.
Short answer: ChatGPT does not have a ranking you can buy or a setting you can switch on. When a customer asks “who is the best plumber in Bel Air?”, it searches the web, reads review sites, directories and business websites, and names the few businesses those sources agree on. To rank in ChatGPT (and Claude and Gemini), you make those sources say the same clear thing about you: complete listings on the sites AI reads, a steady pace of new reviews, a page on your own site that says what you do and where, and a Google Business Profile that is filled in and answered. Then you measure it every week, because one answer proves nothing.

How ChatGPT decides who to recommend
For a local question, ChatGPT runs a web search, reads what comes back and writes an answer from it. It does not keep a fixed top-ten list. That means your “AI ranking” is really a question of what the web says about you when it looks.
The sources are narrower than most owners think:
- Yelp. ChatGPT’s business cards draw on Yelp data in about 95% of runs, even though Yelp is shown as a link only about 1% of the time (Steady Demand, August 2026). Claude links Yelp in 93% of its local answers (8ight, October 2026).
- BBB, licensing sites, Expertise.com and Angi. Through the API, ChatGPT linked the BBB in 39% of local answers, government or licensing sites in 25%, Expertise.com in 16% and Angi in 12% (8ight, October 2026).
- Your own website. When ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Google’s AI all picked the same business, that business’s own site was cited 91% of the time (Yext, September 2026).
In our own study of 1,080 AI answers across four Maryland towns, Yelp, Angi, YellowPages, HomeAdvisor and Facebook came up again and again behind the answers.
1. Fix the listings AI actually reads
Claim and complete your Yelp, BBB, Angi and Facebook pages, plus any licensing board listing for your trade. Use the exact same business name, phone number, town and service list on every one. If one says “Smith Plumbing LLC” and another says “Smith & Sons”, AI may treat you as two weaker businesses instead of one strong one.
Write the services out in plain words (“water heater replacement”, “emergency drain cleaning”), not just a category. AI matches the words in the customer’s question to the words on your listings.
2. Get reviews steadily, and answer them
Review count and pace matter more than your star average. In one October 2026 test, ChatGPT named 3.4% of businesses with under 25 reviews and 22% of businesses with 1,000 or more, and star rating made no difference (8ight). Businesses that all four big AIs agreed on got 12.2 new reviews a month against 1.9 for the rest, and replied to 62% of their reviews against 33% (Yext, September 2026).
So ask every happy customer, every week, and reply to every review, good or bad. A slow trickle beats a one-time push.
3. Have one page that says what you do and where
AI needs a page it can quote. Put your main service, your town and the towns you cover, your phone number and your hours in plain sentences near the top of your home page or a service page. “We repair and replace water heaters in Bel Air, Fallston and Forest Hill, MD. Same-day service, call 410-555-0100” is something an assistant can lift straight into an answer. A slider with a slogan is not.
4. Fill in your Google Business Profile
Gemini and Google’s AI lean on Google’s own data, and Google’s AI can now call businesses to ask about price and availability and to book, in every US state except Indiana, Louisiana, Minnesota, Montana and Nebraska (Google Business Profile help, checked October 2026). Keep your hours, services, service area, photos and booking link current, and post updates. It is also what decides your Google Maps rank, which still sends most local customers.
5. Answer the phone
Being named is only half of it. When Google’s AI called businesses to ask for prices, about half of the answered calls got no price, and home services did worst (Invoca, December 2025). If an assistant or a customer calls and nobody picks up, the recommendation turns into a job for someone else. Pick up, or have a person or service that does.
6. Measure it the right way
AI answers move around. Only 20% to 33% of the businesses named in one run show up again in the next, and ChatGPT’s lists within one town overlap only 36% from one spot to another (BrightLocal, September 2026). One screenshot of one answer tells you very little.
Ask the same customer questions every week, across ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, from your town, and track how often you are named over a month. That is what SeenRank does: it runs those questions weekly, shows who gets named instead of you, tracks your Google rank next to it, and turns the misses into a short to-do list. What does not move your AI ranking
- llms.txt and special markup. llms.txt gets about 0.1% of AI bot visits in vendor crawl logs, and Google says no special files or markup are needed for its AI features. Fine to have, not a reason anyone names you.
- Star rating alone. A 4.9 with 12 reviews loses to a 4.6 with 400.
- Being #1 on Google Maps. In 27 of 40 categories in our study, AI’s top pick was not the Maps #1. In 10, it was outside the Maps top ten. See the AI Rankings for every answer.
If you are on the map but AI never names you, here is why that happens.
FAQ
Can you pay to rank in ChatGPT?
Not in the regular answers. ChatGPT has started showing ads with geo targeting, but those are marked as ads and sit apart from the recommendations. The businesses ChatGPT names in its answer are picked from what it reads on the web: review sites, directories and your own pages.
How long does it take to rank in ChatGPT?
Expect weeks, not days. AI assistants re-read the web all the time, but the sources they trust (Yelp, BBB, Angi, your reviews) change slowly. Measure every week and judge the trend over a month or more, because the same question asked twice often gets a different list.
Is ranking in ChatGPT the same as ranking on Google?
No. In our study of 1,080 AI answers in Harford County, Maryland, the business AI named most was not #1 on Google Maps in 27 of 40 categories. Google Maps leans on distance and the map listing. AI reads review sites, directories and your website. You want both, so track both.
Does llms.txt or special markup help me rank in AI answers?
No known AI needs it. Vendor crawl logs show llms.txt gets about 0.1% of AI bot visits, and Google says no special files or markup are needed for its AI features. Plain, accurate pages and listings matter far more.
How do I check where I rank in ChatGPT?
Ask the question your customer would ask, with your town in it, and do it more than once. Or run the free check at seenrank.com/check: it asks for you and shows whether you are named and who is named instead. No signup.
