How to check if Perplexity mentions your company
Updated 2026-05-13. By the SeenRank team.
Short answer: open Perplexity, ask the buying-intent question a real customer would ask in your category, and look at the numbered citations under the answer. If your domain is in that list, you are cited. If your brand name appears in the answer text, you are mentioned. Different things, both worth tracking, ten seconds per query.
Why Perplexity is the easiest engine to test
Perplexity ships every answer with a numbered list of sources, visible by default. ChatGPT, Claude, and Google AI Overview each cite differently. ChatGPT shows source pills only sometimes, Claude with web embeds links inline, and Google AI Overview surfaces a "Show more" panel. Perplexity is the engine where the test is unambiguous: either you are in the citation list or you are not.
That clarity makes Perplexity the best place to start. It tells you, with no parsing required, whether your content is winning the citation slot for the queries that matter in your category.
The 10-second manual check
-
Step 1: open perplexity.ai in incognito
Logged-in Perplexity uses your search history to weight results. An incognito window gives you the answer a stranger sees.
-
Step 2: paste the category buying-intent question
Not your brand name. The customer question. "Best wireless earbuds under $100", "top CRM for a 5-person sales team", "mobile detailer in Austin". The point is to test the open buying moment.
-
Step 3: read the numbered citations
Every Perplexity answer shows a numbered citation list directly under the response. Click each one and check whether your domain appears. If yes, you are cited. Note the rank (citation #1 is the strongest slot; citations after #5 are read less often).
-
Step 4: scan the answer text for your brand name
Citation and brand mention are different. Your domain can be cited without your brand name appearing in the synthesized answer (Perplexity used your page but did not name you in the prose). Your brand name can appear in the answer without your domain being cited (Perplexity pulled the mention from a third-party source that named you). Both count, in different ways.
-
Step 5: repeat with three query variants
Same intent, different phrasing. Perplexity is more deterministic than ChatGPT, but the citation set still shifts query-to-query. Three variants is the minimum to know whether you are sometimes-cited, always-cited, or never-cited.
Or run a free check that covers all four engines
The Perplexity manual test is fast for one query. It scales badly when you want to check 20 queries weekly across four engines. SeenRank's free check covers ChatGPT today, and the full SeenRank product tracks ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overview weekly with one Monday-morning report. No incognito window required.
What gets you cited by Perplexity specifically
Perplexity is built on a real-time web search layer (Perplexity Sonar) plus large language model synthesis. The Princeton, Georgia Tech, Allen Institute, and IIT Delhi KDD 2024 study found that adding statistics to a page raises citation rate in AI engines by 41%, and direct quotes add another 28%. Those levers apply to Perplexity, but three Perplexity-specific factors stack on top:
-
Freshness wins on Perplexity, more than on the other engines
Perplexity heavily favors recently-updated pages. Content updated in the last 3 months gets cited at roughly twice the rate of older content. The fastest win on Perplexity is updating
dateModifiedon your strongest existing pages when you genuinely refresh them, not faking updates. -
Citation density inside your page helps
Perplexity rewards pages that themselves cite authoritative sources. Linking out to peer-reviewed studies, government data, and recognized industry leaders teaches Perplexity that your page is in the "trustworthy" cluster. This is one of the few cases in modern SEO where outbound links measurably help.
-
Schema.org markup matters more on Perplexity than on ChatGPT
Perplexity's parser keys off structured data heavily.
ArticlewithauthoranddateModified,FAQPageon Q&A sections,HowToon step-by-step content, andOrganizationwithsameAslinking to your LinkedIn, X, and GitHub all increase the chance Perplexity treats your page as a citation-quality source.
What to do when you are not cited
-
Look at who is cited
Perplexity shows you the answer. Click each citation and read the page. You will see what is winning the slot: usually a specific page (a comparison post, a category guide, a strong FAQ), not the whole site. Reverse-engineer that page. What does it cover that yours does not?
-
Fix the first 200 words on your equivalent page
If your most important pages start with preamble or "in this article we'll cover", Perplexity's extractor will skip you. Lead with a 40-55 word direct answer that fully resolves the buying-intent question, then expand below.
-
Add at least two statistics with cited sources
The Princeton study quantified the lift: statistics are the largest single citation lever. Add two or three hard data points per high-leverage page with links to authoritative sources, sprinkled through the body, not bunched at the end.
-
Ship FAQ schema
Any Q&A section gets
FAQPageJSON-LD. Perplexity extracts these directly as candidate answers. This is the highest-yield, lowest-effort change on most sites. -
Earn third-party mentions
Perplexity weights Reddit, niche forums, and industry blogs heavily because they are crawled fresh. A genuinely useful Reddit answer that mentions your brand by name can move Perplexity's view of you within a week.

How is Perplexity different from ChatGPT?
Three differences worth knowing:
- Citations are visible by default. Perplexity surfaces every source under the answer. ChatGPT shows source pills inconsistently. This makes Perplexity easier to audit and harder to game.
- Freshness weight is higher. Perplexity prioritizes recently-updated pages more aggressively than ChatGPT, which leans on its trained corpus plus its Bing web layer.
- Brand mentions matter less for Perplexity, citations matter more. ChatGPT can mention your brand from training data even if it never sees your page. Perplexity rarely mentions a brand it has not just fetched and read. The fix on Perplexity is content; the fix on ChatGPT is content plus brand co-occurrence in the wild.
FAQ
Does Perplexity Pro use different sources than free Perplexity?
The default Perplexity model and the Pro model both pull from the same web layer, but Pro can use larger model variants (GPT-4, Claude, etc.) for synthesis. The citation set is similar; the prose synthesizing those citations differs. For brand-visibility checking, the free tier is sufficient.
How often does Perplexity refresh its picture of my brand?
New content enters Perplexity's citation pool within roughly 3-5 business days of indexing. Brand-level reputation shifts (how Perplexity talks about you, not just whether it cites you) take longer, typically 2-6 weeks of consistent new content and third-party mentions.
Can I get Perplexity to remove an outdated or wrong citation?
Indirectly. Perplexity does not accept manual takedown requests for individual citations. The fix is to publish a clear, recent, schema-marked page that supersedes the outdated source. Once Perplexity indexes the newer page, it tends to favor it over older citations on the same query.
Does the SeenRank free check cover Perplexity?
